An overheating handheld radio charger has been deemed to be the cause of a fire at the Tospham Home Depot early Monday morning.
Topsham firefighters were dispatched to the Home Depot on Topsham Fair Mall Road around 4:25 a.m. Monday, advised by a police officer already on the scene that flames and smoke were visible inside the store.
“Tospham fire units arrived on scene (and) found a working fire near the cash register area,” Topsham fire Chief Chris McLaughlin said in a statement.
Firefighters forced entry into the building and “made an interior attack,” McLaughlin said, extinguishing the flames.
One firefighter was transported to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries.
“Fire damage was limited to the area of origin,” McLaughlin said. “However, there was smoke and water damage throughout a good portion of the building.”
Brunswick and Lisbon fire departments assisted the Topsham department on the scene, while West Bath’s fire department provided coverage.
