To help raise awareness and assist local agencies during October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Skowhegan Woman’s Club donated books to two local agencies.

On Oct. 25, SWC Secretary Sharon Adams and SWC Board of Directors’ Member Vi Ferland delivered the two collections of five books each to Kennebec Behavioral Health and Family Violence Project in Skowhegan. These children’s books will be used by trained personnel to help address domestic violence with children whose young lives have been affected, with the goal to help them cope, heal and find peace, according to a news release from Mary Cayford with the club.
The books donated included “Mommy’s Black Eye” (preschool) by William George Bentrim, “A Family That Fights” (K-Grade 4) by Sharon Chesler Bernstein, “Something is Wrong at My House” (K-Grade 4) by Diane Davis, “Hear My Roar: A Story of Family Violence” (Grades 1-4, and “The Day My Daddy Lost His Temper” (2 years and older) by Dr. Carol Santana McLeary.
Area women, not limited to Skowhegan residents, interested in learning more about the Skowhegan Woman’s Club or attending a meeting can call President Bonnie Chamberlain at 207-474-3146 or member Cayford at 207-474-9820.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
