FAIRFIELD — Two men were arrested and charged Thursday afternoon with aggravated drug trafficking following a traffic stop in Fairfield that was the culmination of a monthslong investigation into the sale of illegal drugs in the area, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Three sheriff’s detectives and two deputies stopped a Jeep Patriot on Route 139, also known as the Norridgewock Road, and executed a search warrant that resulted in the seizure of 169 grams of fentanyl, according to information provided by Sheriff Dale Lancaster.
The estimated street value of the fentanyl was nearly $17,000, according to Lancaster.
Crack cocaine, drug-related paraphernalia and other drug-related material were also found in the search of the Jeep, he said.
Lancaster said deputies took the Jeep’s driver, Shane Murphy Sr., 48, of Fairfield into custody.
Murphy is facing an elevated charge of aggravated trafficking in drugs because of the amount of fentanyl that was found, Lancaster said.
Murphy was on probation for an unrelated case when arrested Thursday. He was being held without bail Saturday at the Somerset County Jail in Madison, according to online jail records.

Lancaster said deputies also arrested a passenger in the Jeep: Travis Clement, 44, of Norridgewock. In addition to the aggravated drug trafficking charge, Clement was charged with refusing to sign a criminal summons.
Clement was being held Saturday at the Somerset County Jail on $10,000 cash bail, according to jail records.
Both men have initial court appearances scheduled for Nov. 8 in Skowhegan.
