SMITHFIELD — A man was arrested after an eight-hour standoff with Maine State Police.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m., when police responded to a report of domestic violence near Quaker Lane, according to a news release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. The caller reported being assaulted and threatened by 33-year-old Sy Perri.

Officers arriving at the scene found Perri barricaded inside a residence along Quaker Lane. Police tried making contact with Perri, but did not receive a response.
“He was believed to be armed, dangerous, and inside of the house,” Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said in an interview. “He wasn’t communicating with us from inside.”
About two hours into the standoff, Smithfield firefighters and Somerset sheriffs closed a segment of East Pond Road near the scene. The road remained closed until the standoff ended.
During the standoff, detectives from the sheriff’s office obtained a pair of search and arrest warrants against Perri.
The standoff ended at around 9:30 pm., when officers from the Maine State Police tactical unit moved in to execute the search and arrest warrants. Police located Perri “near the residence, not in it,” according to Mitchell, and arrested him shortly after.
Mitchell said no gun shots were fired.
Perri has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He was being held Thursday at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison.
