VASSALBORO — Two adults and two children were injured Saturday morning in Vassalboro when their SUV attempted to pass other vehicles on state Route 3, swerved to avoid oncoming traffic and rolled over, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was forced to swerve into a ditch to avoid oncoming traffic and then went airborne, according to Lt. Chris Read, who said the crash occurred at about 10:30 a.m., near the Augusta line.
Witnesses said the SUV rolled twice before coming to rest on its top on the road also known as U.S. Route 202 or North Belfast Avenue.
“A driver from out of state was traveling eastbound and they tried passing cars by going into the westbound lane,” Read said. “They swerved to avoid oncoming traffic, entered the ditch, becoming airborne, which caused the vehicle to tumble.”
The road was closed temporarily as rescue workers responded to the crash and tended to the injured.
The driver, a 31-year-old passenger and two children, ages 5 and 8, suffered injuries not believed to be serious, Read said.
An ambulance responded to the crash, but Read said he was not certain if any of the four was taken to a hospital.
It was not clear Monday if any of those in the SUV was wearing a seat belt.
