The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program’s Ninth annual Golf Tournament took place on June 23 at Lakewood Golf Course in Madison. The event raised $23,000 to support a micro-transit pilot project. Hannaford provided a $2,000 grant to also support the pilot.
Delivering traditional public transit in rural areas is extremely challenging and costly. KVCAP’s Transportation Department recognizes the need to explore more flexible, innovative, and responsive options. The first pilot project will focus on a micro-transit model for older Mainers. Micro-transit uses fuel-efficient vans to provide on-demand rides, similar to Uber or a taxi service, but with lower fares than commercial ride services. More information about the pilot project will be available in late summer, 2023, according to a news release from Andrea Pasco, KVCAP development director, based in Waterville.
Top event supporters include Wipfli LLC, Cross Insurance, Efficient Air LLC, EW Littlefield Inc., Healey & Associates, Randy’s Full Service Auto, and Taylor, McCormack & Frame LLC.
The first place gross winning team was DOBA, and Skowhegan Savings earned second place. Ride With Us received first place for net score and Performance Food Group came in second place. Rob Mowatt, Joel Allen, Tyler Russell and Bill Logan scored closest to the pin on one of four holes, and the longest drive winners were Maureen Heath and Tyler Russell.
This event continues to be held in memory of Mark K. Johnston. He was KVCAP’s chief financial officer for more than 20 years and was a staunch supporter of community action, helping people and changing lives. Johnston passed away in 2018 and is greatly missed.
