ROCKPORT — The next online lecture of the Maine Media Workshops + College’ weekly Alumni Lecture Series, set for 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, will feature a medical volunteer and photographer.
Dr. Jon Kolkin will present “Being Respectful When Photographing in Unfamiliar Cultural Settings.” He will share some of his experiences while living and photographing in Buddhist communities, lessons learned and additional insights.
The lecture is hosted by visual artist, physical therapist and Maine Media faculty alum Sue Michlovitz.
Kolkin is a physician, humanitarian and internationally-recognized photographer with extensive experience living and photographing in under-resourced countries worldwide.
His most recent book, “Inner Harmony: Living in Balance,” with forwards by the Dalai Lama and Queen Mother of Bhutan, include rare and intimate photographs of Buddhist monastics and laypeople from 10 Asian countries, taken during 17 extended stays over 13 years.
The work demonstrates Kolkin’s success in accomplishing his photographic objectives while remaining sensitive and respectful of his subjects.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
