WINSLOW — Three cars parked near Winslow Elementary School and the superintendent’s office were broken into Thursday afternoon, and local police are asking for the public’s help in identifying who committed the crimes.

Items such as a wallet, purse and cash were stolen from the vehicles, police said.

The cars broken into belonged to people in attendance at a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference girls track meet between host Winslow and Skowhegan, Messalonskee and Waterville.

“We actually had one (car) with smashed windows and two that were unlocked,” Winslow police Chief Leonard Macdaid said Friday. “We’re working with Augusta police because we have a pretty good lead that we’re working on, but there’s nothing else really to report at this stage.”

Winslow police responded to two different calls about the incident between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday. The third car owner approached a Winslow officer on scene who was already checking out one of the cars. Police are continuing investigation of the incident and remind the public to keep their vehicles locked.
