NEW YORK — Semyon Varlamov stopped 25 shots for his league-leading sixth shutout of the season and 250th career win as the New York Islanders beat the rival Rangers 4-0 on Thursday night.

Leo Komarov, Oliver Wahlstrom, Anthony Beauvillier and Mathew Barzal scored, and Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield each had two assists for the Islanders. Coming off three straight losses to first-place Washington, they won for the third time in eight games (3-4-1) to remain one point ahead of fourth-place Boston in the East Division.

The Rangers, who had won three straight and seven of the their last nine, fell six points behind the Bruins for the final playoff spot in the East. The Rangers have five games remaining and Boston has six – including two against each other.

PENGUINS 5, CAPITALS 4: Jake Guentzel scored his 22nd goal 2:11 into overtime to lift Pittsburgh to a victory at the Washington – a result that clinched both teams’ place in the playoffs.

Guentzel’s winner on a one-time redirection of John Marino’s pass came after Washington’s Tom Wilson forced overtime with 14.3 seconds remaining in regulation

The result, combined with the Islanders’ win over the Rangers, ensures that the Penguins and Capitals will be among the Eastern Division’s four playoff teams.

DEVILS 5, FLYERS 3: Yegor Sharangovich scored twice, Mackenzie Blackwood made 21 saves and New Jersey beat visiting Philadelphia.

Jesper Boqvist, Pavel Zacha and Jesper Bratt also scored as the Devils won their second straight game after an 0-9-1 stretch. Defensemen Damon Severson and Will Butcher each recorded two assists.

LIGHTNING 3, STARS 0: Blake Coleman converted a short-handed penalty shot and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 20 shots for his 26th career shutout to lead the Tampa Bay past visiting Dallas.

Ondrej Palat and Brayden Point also scored for Tampa Bay, which has won four consecutive games.

Vasilevskiy’s shutout was his third this season against Dallas and fifth overall. Vasilevskiy also reached 30 victories for a franchise-record fourth consecutive season.

HURRICANES 3, RED WINGS 1: Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and assist for his first points in more than two months, and Carolina won at home to stretch its points streak to nine games.

Teravainen was in his second game back after sitting out 32 of 33 games because of a concussion. He hadn’t recorded a point since Feb. 19.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, CANUCKS 1: Auston Matthews scored his NHL-leading 36th goal of the season as Toronto won at home.

Matthews, 23, hit the 60-point mark for a fifth straight season since getting picked first overall at the 2016 draft.

DUCKS: Goalie Ryan Miller will retire at the conclusion of the season, ending the 18-year career of the winningest American-born goaltender in NHL history.

Miller, 40, has played 794 games for Buffalo, Vancouver, St. Louis and Anaheim. He won the Vezina Trophy in 2010 as the NHL’s best goaltender for Buffalo.

With a career 390-289-87 record and a .914 save percentage, Miller is first in victories by an American-born goalie while ranking second in shutouts (44) and games played. He is 14th overall on the NHL victory list.
