SCARBOROUGH — Maine is accepting applications for the state’s annual moose hunt, which expanded by hundreds of permits last year.

The moose hunt takes place every fall. The state decided to boost the number of permits by more than 20 percent to 2,500 for fall 2018. The number of permits that will be available this year will be determined through a rulemaking process.

The state uses a lottery system to distribute moose hunt permits, as tens of thousands of hunters typically apply for a relatively small number of permits.

State officials say the applications can only be submitted online and the deadline is 11:59 p.m. on May 15. The drawing will be held at Cabela’s in Scarborough on June 8.
