Fryeburg police have arrested a local man who they say crashed into a parked SUV with such force that it pushed the vehicle into a garage and knocked the garage off its foundation.

Police Chief Joshua Potvin issued a statement Thursday that identified the driver as Nelson Brown, 65, of Fryeburg.

Potvin said that when officers arrived at 82 Lovewell Pond Road around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday they found a black 2014 Toyota SUV that had been “launched” from the home’s driveway into the garage, shifting the garage off its foundation. Police determined that the driver who hit the SUV fled in a black 2006 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck.

Brown was arrested Thursday and taken to the Oxford County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a felony, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, a misdemeanor. His bail was set at $500 cash.

“Fortunately no one was seriously injured in this crash,” Potvin said in a statement. “Anytime a vehicle unintentionally leaves the roadway, it is a recipe for disaster.”

Potvin said officers suspect that excessive speed and driver impairment were factors in the crash.
