WATERVILLE — The City Council on Tuesday is scheduled to go into executive session to evaluate City Manager Michael Roy, whose five-year contract expires Dec. 31.
Roy, 64, has been city manager since October 2004 and is paid an annual salary of $117,300.
“Obviously, I’m hopeful to continue working for the city,” Roy said Thursday afternoon. “I don’t expect a five-year contract; I’m hopeful that a three-year contract could be agreed on. There are so many exciting things going on, and I certainly hope to be a part of that.”
Roy was referring to a downtown revitalization effort by the city and Colby College. Part of that effort includes the ongoing demolition of the former Levine’s building so a 42-room boutique hotel with a restaurant can be built in its place.
Colby bought the Levine’s building and four others with plans to either renovate them or tear them down and partner with investors to create new businesses. The college also plans to start building a downtown student residential complex next year on the northeast corner of The Concourse, across Main Street from the Hains building.
The council meeting involving Roy’s contract is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the council chamber at The Center downtown, with the executive session scheduled for last on the agenda. Councilors are expected to vote in December on whether to renew Roy’s contract.
In other matters Tuesday, the council expects to hear a report from Waterville Main Street, updating the organization’s plans. The nonprofit group hosts a number of community initiatives and events, such as the upcoming downtown Parade of Lights and opening of Kringleville.
The council is scheduled to consider requests for extending both Black Bear Aviation and Airlink’s leases at the city-owned Robert LaFleur Municipal Airport.
“They’re both to add additional space to the office space they’re already occupying,” Roy said.
Councilors are scheduled to take a final vote on amending the zoning ordinance to allow Maine State Credit Union at 81 Grove St. to expand its drive-thru, parking lot and building. Councilors took a first vote Nov. 1 to approve the change.
Councilors also will vote to confirm results of Tuesday’s election for municipal offices, discuss real estate negotiations in executive session and listen to the reading of a document proclaiming Nov. 26 Small Business Saturday.
