Nick Danner forced a fumble on the second play, Waterville scored three plays later and the Panthers cruised to a 63-10 win over Oceanside in a Pine Tree Conference Class B football game at Drummond Field.

Whistles echoed across fields throughout central Maine this week. Athletes did a lot of running, met a few new teammates and did their best not to embarrass themselves learning a new play or running a new drill.

It all looked so familiar, running the Kennebec River Rail Trail on Sunday morning. The wooden fence lining its edge. The stretch along Water Street in downtown Hallowell. The big ole hat sign at Hi-Hat Pancake House in Farmingdale. The Kennebec River on my left. The end of the trail at Hannaford in Gardiner.

SOUTH CHINA — Travis St. Pierre doubled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on an error as the Messalonskee baseball team beat Hampden Academy 3-2 in an Eastern B semifinal game Saturday at Erskine Academy.

Jacoby Ellsbury didn’t homer on the first pitch thrown by Justin Verlander like Dwight Evans did off Jack Morris the last time the Red Sox opened their season in Detroit. Still, Thursday was a special day.
