SNAPSHOT: Horseback preacher

Dan Boyd, left, and his son, Gary, ride through Vassalboro Thursday with a pair of steeds during their nationwide tour of the United States on horseback. The riders have crossed several southern states since their journey commenced in September of 2012 and hope to cover the eastern seaboard this year. “The Lord put it in my heart,” Dan Boyd, a pastor from Kansas, said. “We plan to preach on the way.”

SNAPSHOT: Alewife harvesters

Nicole Brann dips alewives May 15 at the headwaters of Seven Mile Stream at Webber Pond in Vassalboro, as Corey Cookson watches. The duo were harvesting the migrating fish for Ron Weeks, who holds the contract from the town of Vassalboro to sell alewife to lobster fisherman. Three dips filled a crate that weighed about 250 pounds, Cookson said, and held about 500 alewives.
