Matt Ginn, chef at Evo Kitchen + Bar in Portland and the 2015 Maine Lobster Chef of the Year, won the episode and a $10,000 prize on Food Network’s “Chopped” Tuesday night.
Ginn’s episode, “Room for ‘Shrooms,” aired at 9 p.m. on the Food Network. Evo invited the public to cheer for Ginn at a viewing party Tuesday evening in the downstairs portion in the restaurant, where the show streamed while small bites and drink specials were served. Part-time Mainer Martha Stewart was one of the celebrity judges critiquing Ginn’s food.
“It feels great to be a Chopped champion,” he said at the end of the episode. “I just did a three-course dinner for Martha Stewart and two Iron Chefs.”
Ginn, who is also executive chef at the Chebeague Island Inn, is one of several Maine chefs who have appeared on the show lately. Most recently, Zachary Pratt of Boba, a small southeast Asian restaurant in Lewiston, was on an episode that aired July 3. The last Maine chef to win the show was Christian Hayes of Dandelion Catering, who took home the $10,000 in March on an episode featuring pork.
Chef contestants on “Chopped” are given mystery baskets of ingredients to create an original dish for a panel of judges in a limited time. Each episode usually features appetizer, entree and dessert rounds. The chef – of the four total – whose dish isn’t up to the judges’ standards gets “chopped” from the competition after each round, until the chef left standing wins $10,000.
