The Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon team, who are the Maine State Champions, are now the National Super Quiz Champions, Division III; third-place national team, Division III; and had the highest scoring varsity student in the nation, Division III.

The Monmouth Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, competed in this year’s National Academic Decathlon Championship, which was held on April 19-21, in Frisco, Texas. This National Academic Decathlon Championship had more than 600 students, competing against each other, from the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

Academic Decathlon is comprised of A, B and C students, who study together as a team for the year, then compete in 10 (decathlon) categories: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language/Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. The theme changes every year. This year’s theme was Africa, and next year it will be the 1960’s.

In the past, Monmouth has competed in the following National Academic Decathlon Championships: 1999 California, 2002 Arizona, 2004 Idaho, 2013 Minnesota and 2016 Alaska.

Monmouth National team members include Jaryd Bates, Bryce Boulet, Chris Dumont, Amber Currie, Dylan Goff, Caitlin Hunt, Natalie Grandahl, Rhayna Poulin and Ed Zuis.
