Nick Hanlon will take over as interim varsity baseball coach at York High, Athletic Director Andy Wood said on Friday.
Hanlon was the team’s junior varsity coach the past four seasons. The switch comes after five-year varsity coach Chuck Chadbourne was removed from his active position on Wednesday. Chadbourne was arrested on March 17 in York on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The high school baseball season began Monday with pitchers and catchers reporting for a week of conditioning and throwing. News broke Wednesday that Chadbourne had left the team, and was confirmed by Wood on Thursday.
Full-squad practices start this Monday.
“In an effort to put my guys first, and gain positive momentum going forward, I am throwing myself into the increased role I will be playing with the Wildcat baseball program this year,” Hanlon said via email.
A social studies teacher at York High, Hanlon is the school’s junior varsity girls’ soccer coach.
He has been connected to baseball in York at various levels. In addition to his junior varsity job at the high school, he has been a coach with the Saco Bay Physical Therapy American Legion team that plays its home games at York High. He is listed as the Youth Development Coordinator and a U11 coach for the Coastal Riptide club baseball team, which was founded by Chadbourne.
In his five seasons at York, Chadbourne’s teams compiled a 65-27 record, won the 2013 Class B state championship and advanced to last season’s South regional final.
