ROCKPORT — More than $12,000 in scholarships is available for aspiring filmmakers to attend Maine Media Workshops + College.

The college is known around the world for its hands-on teaching style. Faculty in cinematography, directing, editing and screenwriting split their time between teaching and working in the film industry, according to a news release from the college.

Funding for these scholarships is provided through a grant from the Virginia Cabot Wellington Foundation and an annual memorial scholarship in honor of Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Lehmann. Lehmann taught at the college for more than seven years, mentoring nearly 200 students from 15 countries across the globe, according to the release.

Established by family and friends, the Chris Lehmann memorial scholarship can be used as partial tuition assistance for Maine Media’s four-week film school and will also cover half the cost of a certificate in visual storytelling or collaborative filmmaking. Alternatively, the scholarship may also be applied to the tuition for any one-week filmmaking workshop.

The deadline for Maine Media Workshop + College scholarships has been extended to March 12, for interested applicants.
