NEW SHARON — A Harmony woman ended up in jail Monday after a county deputy stopped the vehicle she was driving twice for going 30 miles or more over the posted speed limit on Mercer Road.
Franklin County sheriff’s Deputy Brian McCormick stopped a car traveling 70 miles per hour in a 40 mph posted speed zone at 11:01 a.m., according to Sheriff Scott Nichols.
McCormick issued the driver, identified as Nichole McCarthy, 27, of Harmony, a summons on a charge of criminal speed and released her at the scene.
McCormick was patrolling Mercer Road again at approximately 2 p.m., and he saw a vehicle traveling 87 mph in a 55 mph posted speed-limit zone, Nichols wrote in a release.
He stopped the vehicle and immediately recognized it as the one he had stopped earlier in the day, and McCarthy was driving it.
McCormick arrested her on a misdemeanor charge of criminal speed and took her to the Franklin County Jail in Farmington. Once at jail, she was asked, like all prisoners, if she had any type of drug or contraband on her and to surrender it before entering the jail, Nichols wrote.
After answering “no” she entered the jail and upon a search, prescription drugs not prescribed to her were found, he said.
She was charged additionally on a felony charge of trafficking in prison contraband and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
McCarthy posted $300 cash bail and was released from jail. She is scheduled to appear in a Farmington court on March 27.
