A Colorado brewery founded by a trio of women has introduced a new beer, called Collins and Murkowski, named in honor of Maine Sen. Susan Collins and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski. In a Facebook post laced with four beer-related puns, Collins said, “We appreciate their recognition of our work to craft commonsense legislation, and we will continue to urge Congress to hop to it and advance good public policy that benefits all Americans.”
The chocolate stout is aged on maple wood and clocks in at 7.1% alcohol by volume. Mainers who want to try the brew will either have to strike up a trade with somebody in Colorado or hop on a plane. Lady Justice Brewing – which says the beer honors the duo “for standing their ground and demanding the best for their country,” though it doesn’t mention what that specifically means – only distributes in Colorado.
Collins and Murkowski, along with Arizona Sen. John McCain, were the three Republicans who voted no last summer on a “skinny repeal” bill that would have repealed the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Health analysts said that would have cost some 16 million Americans their health insurance. Their votes tipped the Senate majority and derailed the repeal.
It’s not the brewery’s first foray into political names. Sandra Day IPA is named after former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Merkel’s Thursday, a hefeweizen, honors Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.
