Susan Adams, recreation manager for Elliotsville Plantation Inc., and volunteer coordinator for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, will be the keynote speaker at Alpha Psi State’s annual Education Workshop Oct. 21 in the Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Twelve professional development sessions are planned between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Adams will share her personal story of community outreach and involvement in the mission to create a new National Park Unit in Maine and the realization that residents can preserve and rebuild exceptional places in the communities.
The day-long workshop will feature 12 active and retired Maine educators who will present sessions on teaching strategies and implementation of effective lessons, as well as personal enrichment sessions. Topics range from paper crafts, accessing free books, project-based learning, Tai Chi, virtual communication, place-based learning, and digi-blocks. Up to 3.5 Continuing Education Credits are available.
Presenters from Aroostook County will be Nancy Watson, pre-K teacher from Pine Street School in Presque Isle; Londa Brown, retired library media specialist from Washburn; and Elizabeth York, library media specialist from Easton schools. Watson will conduct a session using Digi-Blocks to help students understand number concepts, and Brown and York will share how to access Maine’s online free libraries to download books. Elaine Hendrickson, retired middle school teacher and president of Alpha Psi, is coordinating the workshop.
The statewide workshop features sessions on all areas of curricula — including math, science, social studies, ELA, and others sponsored by Alpha Psi State — a chapter of DKG International Society of Women Educators Worldwide.
