The Fayette School Committee is about to interview candidates for the post of part-time superintendent.

The previous superintendent, Jim Hodgkin, had been in place for a year but resigned in June to become full-time interim superintendent in the Central Lincoln County School System in the midcoast area.

Hodgkin also had been superintendent in Regional School Unit 4 — Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales — for eight years before adding the Fayette role in June 2016.

Hodgkin took the job at Alternative Organizational Structure 93 after serving as superintendent of RSU 4 for eight years.

“Mr. Hodgkin got another job quite far away, and they didn’t want him to do another town,” said Elaine Wilcox, chairman of the Fayette School Committee.

Wilcox said Wednesday that a number of candidates had responded to the advertisement for superintendent — a post budgeted for $22,000 for 50 days’ work a year — and that the field had been narrowed to three people who are scheduled for interviews next week.

“They can set their schedule, and they must attend school board meetings,” she added.

In the meantime, Michael Cormier, who had been superintendent in Fayette before Hodgkin, is filling in until a new superintendent is selected.

“We couldn’t convince him to stay, though,” Wilcox said.

The school committee is scheduled to hold a regular meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Fayette Central School library.

Among the agenda items is a request by the committee to make sure the Dahlov Ipcar paintings in the school are adequately insured.

Wilcox said the school acquired them through the Maine Arts Commission Percent for Art program.

The single-town school district, with a $1.7 million budget, had 150 students enrolled last year.

The elementary school, which houses pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, has 76 students this year. Middle school and high school students have their choice of schools to attend elsewhere.
