BRUNSWICK — Messalonskee turned it up a notch in the second half to roll to a 23-0 win against Brunswick in a season-opening Pine Tree Conference Class B football game Friday night.
The Eagles scored all three of their touchdowns in the second half to break open what had been a defensive struggle.
“They were physical up front,” said Brunswick coach Dan Cooper. “We had our opportunities in the first half, and we weren’t good enough to take advantage of them.”
Messalonskee limited the defending state champions to three first downs and 68 yards of total offense during the second half while churning out 228 yards on the ground.
The Eagles held a 3-0 lead at halftime after Kyle Burger-Roy kicked a 35-yard field goal with 43 seconds left in the first quarter.
Messalonskee’s goal-line defense kept the Dragons out of the end zone in the second quarter.
Colton Chavarie scored on a 40-yard run with less than eight minutes left in the third quarter for a 9-0 lead.
With less than three minutes left in the third quarter, Deklan Thurston ran 4 yards on the quarterback keeper for a touchdown.
With less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, Thurston went 12 yards up the middle for a touchdown on a fourth-down play.
