ATHENS — A woman was taken to a Bangor hospital by LifeFlight helicopter Friday afternoon after a two-car crash on Main Street in Athens village, police said.

Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Laurie Dombroski, 58, of Athens, was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer northbound on Route 150, which is also Main Street, when she motored through “the sweeping curve” in front of the Athens Corner Store and into the southbound lane of traffic. The sport utility vehicle veered off the road, struck another vehicle and hit the TDS Telecom building just after 12:30 p.m., police said.

Dombroski was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene and an automated external defibrillator was deployed once by the Athens Fire Department.

Lancaster said Dombroski’s SUV struck a silver 2013 Buick Encore registered to Corey Pomerleau and Bridget Dellarma of Athens, which was parked unattended in front of the TDS building. When the Ford SUV hit the Buick and the TDS building, the Ford caught on fire, Lancaster said.

Someone from M & L Auto garage next to the TDS Building used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, he said.

There was moderate damage to both vehicles, Lancaster said.

Dombroski was taken by ambulance to Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where she was prepared to be taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The cause of the crash is “a possible medical event,” Lancaster said by phone later Friday afternoon. “The crash is still under investigation, and once we’re able to interview her and look at the vehicle, we’ll be able to know more.” He said speed was not a factor.

Assisting at the scene were Cpl. Ritchie Putnam, Deputy Stephen Armiger and the Athens Fire Department. The Explorer was towed from the scene and the Encore was able to be driven away, Lancaster said. Towing was done by M & L Auto.
