Police said a New Gloucester man became combative and tried to grab an officer’s holstered weapon during a confrontation early Monday morning in North Windham. An officer used a Taser on the man before he was finally subdued.
Richard Dean Valliere, 40, was charged with refusing to submit to arrest, assault on an officer, and disorderly conduct, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies assisted Windham police after being called to investigate a report of a suspicious man trying to break into Little Caesars Pizza, 741 Roosevelt Trail, in North Windham around 2:14 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
When deputies arrived and made contact with Valliere, “he became confrontational and assaultive towards them,” the sheriff’s office said. “Valliere was told he was under arrest and he then grabbed onto a deputy’s holstered handgun. Valliere continued to struggle and was attempting to pull the handgun out of the deputy’s holster.”
A second deputy used a Taser on Valliere, but police said he continued to struggle. Officers eventually got him under control before transporting him to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland where his bail was set at $3,000 cash.
He was still being held at the jail Monday night.
Valliere is scheduled to appear in Court on April 12.
