AUGUSTA — The Cinderella run for the Skowhegan Area High School boys basketball team continued on Saturday night.

The Indians, led by 17 points from senior guard Brendan Curran, took the lead for good with under three minutes to play and held on for a 54-53 win over previously unbeaten and top-seeded Medomak Valley in the Class A North quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center.

No. 8 Skowhegan (11-9), which needed double overtime just to escape the preliminary round against Brewer, will face No. 5 Messalonskee in the regional semifinals on Wednesday.

“I’m speechless. Talking to the boys, I didn’t know what to say in the locker room,” coach Tom Nadeau said. “We talked about believing, we talked about one possession at a time. It was going to be a battle from start to finish, and they stuck with it.”

Curran was one of three Indians in double figures, with Cole Pierce and Garrett McSweeney each chipping in 11 points.

Medomak Valley (18-1) was led by 16 points from Cam Allaire.

“They outplayed us,” coach Nicholas DePatsy said. “They hit some big shots, they got some putbacks. We missed some layups here and there, but they’re a good team. They played hard, they deserved to win.”

The Panthers became the third higher-seeded team to lose in the quarterfinals on Saturday. No. 2 Hampden was also bounced out of the tournament, as well as No. 4 Gardiner.

Skowhegan took the lead for good at 48-46 on Curran’s steal and drive midway through the fourth quarter.
