Erskine Academy wrestlers earned three individual championships as the Eagles finished fifth in the team race at the Class B South Regional. Michael Sprague (120 pounds), Brock Glidden (145) and Jake Peavey (285) each brought home gold medals. Erskine coach Patrick Vigue was especially impressed by Glidden’s performance. “Michael and Jake were top seeds and did what was expected,” Vigue said. “But Brock really had a great day.” Glidden entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and scored pins in each of his two preliminary matches to advance to the finals against top-seeded Kurtis Bolton of Lisbon.

“Brock fell behind 5-0 early in the match but then started to rally back,” said Vigue. “He seems to get stronger as the match goes on.”

Glidden went ahead 9-7 in the third period, before the match ended due to an injury to the Lisbon wrestler. Peavey won his second consecutive regional title and holds a season record of 49-1. His lone loss this season is to Bucksports’ David Gross, the B North Regional champion.

“I’m feeling very excited,” he said. “I’d love another chance to prove myself against Bucksport.”

Ryan Fredette cruised to the 182 title as Winslow finished second in the Class B North Regional tournament. Fredette pinned three consecutive opponents to win his weight class. Five of his teammates also earned top four medals and a spot in Saturday’s state championships. Devon Vigue (120) and Ben Abbott (195) advanced to the championship finals. Each dropped one-point decisions to defending state champions. Vigue dropped an 8-7 decision against Oceanside’s Alex Fogarty while Abbott lost 6-5 to Foxcroft Academy’s Billy Brock. It was Abbott’s first loss of the season. Patrick Hopkins was third at 160 while Alex Demers (220) and Keenan Janeski (285) placed fourth. Winslow coach Tony Dalisio was pleased with his team’s performance and looks forward to the state meet.

“We consider our runner-up placement no small achievement, but ultimately view it as a stepping stone towards loftier goals both as a team and within individual weight classes at the state championship,” he said.

MCI’s ZyAnthony Moss (126) also brought home a gold medal from the B North tournament. Moss won his finals match against Foxcroft’s Marcus Caudill in dramatic fashion. Moss trailed by two points with time running out in the third period, but scored a reversal and back points to win 6-4. “As I’ve said all year, his engine never stops,” said coach Mike Libby. “I think everyone in the gym came away knowing you have to wrestle for a full six minutes or you are going to be in trouble against this kid.”
