WATERVILLE — Maine State Police arrested a man early Thursday morning on Interstate 95 for alleged operating under the influence after he was discovered traveling north in the southbound lanes.

Jack Bullock, 66, of Bangor, was driving south around 1:15 a.m. on the highway, when his car struck a guardrail and the car spun around, police said. He was reported headed north at mile 127 in Waterville, near the Kennedy Memorial Drive exit.

Authorities waited to intercept him farther north, at mile 133, and were prepared to drop spike mats on the road, according to a state police news release. However, Fairfield police found Bullock off the road in the median strip between miles 130 and 131 in Waterville.

Trooper Tyler Maloon spoke with Bullock, who said he didn’t know where he was driving. He had vomit all over himself and the car, police said. Bullock’s 2002 Volvo was undamaged, and Bullock said he was not injured and was medically fit to take a field sobriety test.

Maloon administered the test to Bullock and then arrested him on charges of operating under the influence with a prior arrest and operating after suspension. Bullock was taken to the Fairfield Police Department for a breath test, but once it was time to take the test, Bullock complained of sudden head pain.

The release states that Bullock said he then remembered striking his head and that he felt dizzy. He was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health in Waterville, where a blood test was administered. Bullock was released from the hospital later in the morning, and the blood kit results are pending, police said.

Bullock is scheduled to appear April 4 in Waterville District Court.
