INDUSTRY — A fire on Tuesday night destroyed a building used as a seasonal home, but the cause of the blaze is unknown, according to fire officials.

Firefighters received a call at 7:55 p.m. about a fire at 34 New Sharon Road, Industry Fire Chief Kevin Gurney said. A passer-by had seen the flames and alerted a neighbor, who called 911. The building was a two-car garage with an attached apartment.

When firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames, Gurney said. They were able to put the fire out without using an excavator, but they did have to cut some parts of the building with a saw.

The Office of State Fire Marshal declared the building a “total loss,” Gurney said, and the investigator was unable to determine the cause. It’s believed that the fire started in one of the garage bays, but the damage was too extensive to determine what happened.

Gurney said he thinks the building’s owner, who was not there at the time, has insurance. The owner lives in New York but uses the building seasonally as a place to stay while snowmobiling in Maine. The snowmobiles were in a trailer, escaping damage, and no other vehicles were in the garage at the time of the fire.

More than 40 firefighters responded from about 10 fire departments from Franklin and Somerset counties. Gurney said they cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m.
