AUGUSTA — Maine’s expanded archery season for deer is getting started in select areas around the state.
The state uses the expanded archery season to allow hunters to take deer in places where state officials say deer populations can handle more pressure. Most of the areas are places that cannot be hunted with firearms because of local laws. The areas include parts of Bangor, Augusta and South Portland.
The main, statewide archery season for deer begins on Oct. 1 and ends Oct. 30. The firearms season for deer begins on Nov. 2 and runs until Nov. 28.
There is also a muzzleloader season that runs from Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 in all of the Maine and Dec. 7 to Dec. 12 in limited parts of the state.
