In its opening game of the American Legion state tournament, Post 51 of Oakland will face an opponent it’s seen in a state tournament before, although a few years ago.

In 2012, many of the Post 51 players were members of the Fairfield Junior Legion team that defeated Tri-Town for the state title. At 10:30 a.m., Wednesday Post 51 will take on Tri-Town (Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot) in the first round of the tournament at the Wainwright Complex in South Portland.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the New England tournament Aug. 4-9 in Bristol, Connecticut.

Post 51 earned its spot in the tournament by winning the Zone 1 title in its first season in the zone. Zone 1 runner-up Bangor, the defending state championship, will face Zone 2 winner Bessey Motors of South Paris in the first round.

The Zone 3 winner, Morrill Post of South Portland, will face Zone 4 runner-up Saco/Biddeford Savings of Biddeford. Zone 4 winner Staples Crossing of Eliot will take on Zone 3 runner-up Sebago Lakers, made up of players from Bonny Eagle, Windham and Sacopee Valley high schools.
