SKOWHEGAN — Messalonskee pitchers Josh Joy and Connor Garland combined to allow just a single hit to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 road win in baseball over Skowhegan Wednesday at Omar Pomerleau Memorial Field.
Zach Mathieu and Nick Mayo each had a single and a double for Messalonskee (1-0).
Nathan Morris went six strong innings for Skowhegan (0-1) before giving way to Isaiah Vigue in the seventh. The two combined to give up just five hits.
LAWRENCE 8, MT. ARARAT 5: Adam Littlefield went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a season-opening victory in Topsham.
Cody Martin went 2-for-3 and Devon Webb added a pair of singles for Lawrence (1-0). JT Nutting pitched six innings to earn the victory.
Cam Cox had two hits to pace the Eagles (0-1).
BRUNSWICK 4, MT. BLUE 2: The Dragons plated three runs in the bottom of the first and held on from there to sink the Cougars in Brunswick.
John Parker went 6 2/3 innings for Brunswick (1-0) and allowed one unearned run, two hits and struck out 12. At the plate, Parker was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Colton Lawrence threw well for Mt. Blue (0-1) despite suffering the loss, as he allowed five hits and struck out seven in five innings of work.
OXFORD HILLS 11, CONY 1: The Vikings plated nine runs in the first inning to beat the Rams in five innings in South Paris.
Blake Slicer went the distance to pick up the win for Oxford Hills (1-0).
Cony (0-1) got its lone run in the top of the fifth when Connor Perry scored on a base hit from Spencer Buck.
SOFTBALL
MT. BLUE 19, BRUNSWICK 5: The Cougars took advantage of 16 walks to deal the Dragons a five-inning loss in Brunswick.
Mariah Martin, Katelyn Wells and Taylor Burke each had two hits for Mt. Blue (1-0), who broke open a 5-5 tie with eight runs in the fifth inning and six in the sixth.
Emily Girardin and Alyssa Dunston had one hit each for Brunswick (0-1).
WINSLOW 37, WATERVILLE 1, 5 innings: The Black Raiders turned on the offense as they defeated the Purple Panthers in Waterville in the season opener for both teams.
Brooke Haskell homered and singled for Winslow. Cassie Demers added a double and two singles. Hannah Doble pitched the first four innings and struck out eight, and Broghan Gagnon pitched the last inning. Gagnon also walked twice and doubled.
For Waterville, Coby Dangler singled twice and scored on a double by Krista Mairs.
