Cushnoc Academy students recently placed in several school-level competitions.

The 2014 winners of the AMC 8 Mathematics Competition were Isaac Bell, of Readfield, and Liam Buck, of Augusta, who both placed first. The contest, which covers middle school mathematics, is given at participating schools. Its purpose is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of friendly competition at problem solving in a timed format, according to a news release from the school. More than 150,000 students from more than 2,300 schools participate in the AMC 8 contest. For more information, visit amc.maa.org.

The Kennebec County Spelling Bee, held on Feb. 4, was represented by the winner and runner up at the academy. Tom Gingras, a fifth grader, of Augusta, earned first place, and Ian Gervais, a seventh grader, of Chelsea, was school runner up.

Isaac Bell, of Readfield, an eighth-grade student, placed first in the school-level National Geographic Bee, and now will compete at the state-level competition of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Plum Creek. Isaac took a test and finished in the top 100 scorers statewide, according to the release. The state-level Bee will be held Friday, March 27 at the University of Maine at Farmington. The winner of the May competition will advance to the National Geographic Bee national level competition held in May in Washington, D.C.

Cushnoc Academy is a grades four through eight nonsecular school serving the greater Augusta area. The academy focuses on students’ mastery of skills and information at their own levels, while immersing students in a meaningful, rigorous and supportive learning environment. Over the past year, the school has begun to give merit scholarships in programs that have openings for students exemplifying the goals of the academy.
