PRESQUE ISLE — The Maranacook boys opened up the Class B state Nordic classical competition with some impressive performances Monday at the Nordic Heritage Center.
Ethan Harriman and Luca DeAngelis finished first and second, respectively, to give the Black Bears the early lead heading into the second and final day of competition Tuesday.
The Nordic freestyle races will be held Tuesday, also at the Nordic Heritage Center.
The boys skied very well,” Maranacook Nordic coach Steve DeAngelis said. “Ethan and Luca took the first two (spots) and that was critical for us. We have a 10-point lead heading into the second day. I would’ve liked it to be a little more but we’re OK.”
Harriman won the classical race in 15 minutes, 29.30 seconds. DeAngelis finished in 16:07.40. John Parent finished 12th overall with a time of 17:39.10 and Colby Watts followed in 14th (17:53.10) for the Black Bears.
Freeport and Caribou are second and third, respectively, after the first day.
On the girls side, Yarmouth finished with 34 points to finish ahead of Freeport (47), Maranacook (70), Caribou (70) and Kents Hill (72).
The Clippers had five of the top nine finishers.
“We’re tied with Caribou for third and we’d like to see if we can get that,” DeAngelis said.
Abigail Despres finished 14th (20:55) to lead the Bears. Anne McKee finished 10th (19:52) and Aimee Sala went 13th (20:38) to pace Kents Hill.
In Class C, the Merriconeag girls scored 15 points to jump out to a commanding lead after the opening day. Orono (54), Waynflete (62) and Telstar (71) followed.
Jordyn Mann, of Monmouth, finished 18th overall in 23:15.50.
The Merriconeag boys also hold a comfortable lead, finishing with 17 points Monday. Fort Kent follows with 45.
The Alpine competition for Classes A, B and C were postponed Monday at Mt. Abram and Big Rock because of high winds.
Those competitions will be held Tuesday.
