BANGOR — Despite being out-shot by the incredible total of 67 to 2, the University of Maine at Farmington took Husson into double overtime before Husson scored for a 1-0 victory in the North Atlantic Conference field hockey championship game Saturday afternoon at Husson University.

Husson out-shot UMF 25-0 in the first half, 23-1 in the second half, and 15-0 in the first overtime. Finally, with 3:25 left in the second overtime, Husson’s Britt Mellor re-directed a shot by teammate Hanna Jordan for the game’s only goal.

Husson goalie Kaitlin Dolloff made only two saves, but the first was a tough one to deny Winthrop graduate Emmah Spahr 3:10 into the second half. UMF goalie Patty Smith had 28 saves, while Meghan Plant and Gardiner grad Lee-Anne Greenleaf each made defensive saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless.

The win puts Husson in the NCAA tournament. Husson’s Annika Durrell was named the NAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Nokomis grad Taylor Lovley and Skowhegan grad Mikayla Toth were selected to the all-tournament team from the Eagles. UMF’s Meghan Hughes (an MCI grad), Plant, and Chelsea Morley, and Thomas players Erin Nelligan and Brittany Premo were also selected as all-tournament.

MEN’S SOCCER

HUSSON 4, THOMAS 0: Phil Frost scored all three of his goals in the second half as the Eagles pulled away from the Terriers to win the NAC championship in Bangor.

Thomas (10-5-3) actually had a 28-17 advantage in shots. Husson keeper Brian Potter, a Waterville native and Erskine grad, made 12 saves.

Michael Curtis scored an unassisted goal in the 38th minute to give Husson the lead for good. In the second half, two of Frost’s goals were assisted by Josh Bean, and the other was set up by Dylan Wetmore.

Frost, who now has 11 goals on the season, had scored only two over Husson’s last nine games. The Eagles advance to the NCAA tournament by winning the NAC.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 81, BRISTOL CC 55: Four UMA players scored between 16 and 18 points as the Lady Moose defeated the Lady Bees at the Edward Jones Women’s Tap-Off Festival in Concord, N.H.

Freshman Carmen Bragg had 18 points, six rebounds, and eight assists for the Moose (1-0). Another freshman, Kylie Kemp of Monmouth, added 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Jessica St. Amand, an Erskine grad, pitched in with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Richmond’s Jamie Plummer added 17 points and five boards.

Briana Pelton scored 22 points and Nicole Mareiro added 20 to lead the Lady Bees.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MASS BAY CC 87, UMAINE-AUGUSTA 78: All five starters for the Buccaneers scored in double figures as they defeated the Moose on the second and final day of the Edward Jones Tap-Off Festival in Concord, N.H.

Jerry Ellis Williams led Mass Bay with 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Pat McHugh added 15 points and 14 boards.

For UMA (1-2), Lawrence grad Keith Chesley played all 40 minutes, and finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Maranacook grad Taylor Wilbur also played all 40 minutes, and hit five 3-pointers on his way to 25 points and six assists.

CROSS COUNTRY

Colby men 4th, women 10th at ECACs: The Colby men’s and women’s teams each finished in the top 10 out of more than 40 schools at the ECAC championships in Westfield, Mass.

The Colby men were fourth, behind NESCAC rivals Williams, Tufts, and Amherst. Nathan Madeira led Colby runners with a time of 26 minutes, 5.32 seconds on the 8-kilometer course. Noel Feeney finished 15th overall in 26:12.55.

By placing in the top 15, Madeira and Feeney earned all-ECAC honors.

The Mules took 10th place on the women’s side, led by Emily Harper (23:59.24) in 46th place and Shannon Oleynik (24:04.54) in 49th.

Like many schools in the field, Colby sat out its top seven runners on both teams for next weekend’s New England Division III Championships, which is an NCAA qualifying meet.

Also Saturday: Messalonskee graduate Katie Bernatchez and the Boston University field hockey team captured the Patriot League championship with a 2-1 victory over Bucknell. Bernatchez started and played all 70 minutes. With the win, the Terriers get an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. … Another Messalonskee grad also won a field hockey title, as Haley Pelletier’s University of New England team defeated Endicott, 4-3, in double overtime to win the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship. Mt. Blue grad Liz LeClair had an assist for Endicott.
