RICHMOND — Matt Rines and Nathan Vintinner scored and Richmond’s defense limited Buckfield to five shots to secure a crucial 2-1 win in an East-West Conference match Tuesday.
The Bobcats struck first at 18 minutes, 2 seconds of the second half when Marcus Blake’s through ball found Rines with no one between him and Buckfield goalie Jay Randolph.
“It was a pass through the defense and then (Rines) went one-one-one with the goalie and beat him on the left side,” Richmond coach Peter Gardner said.
Vintinner added the insurance goal at the 14:47 mark of the second half with an assist from Curtis Anderson.
“(That goal) was a nice turn-and-play from the opposite side on a change of field and (Vintinner) beat the goalkeeper to his right,” Gardner said.
Richmond (7-0-0) outshot Buckfield 13-5 and held the Bucks (4-2-0) scoreless until Ethan Jackson made the Bobcats pay for a sloppy clear in their own end and spoiled the shutout bid with 1:17 remaining.
Zach Small and Matt Holt split goalkeeping duties for Richmond, combining to stop all five Buckfield shots on goal while playing one half each. Randolph stopped seven shots for the Bucks.
Junior defenders Tyler Soucy and Mike Stewart and senior midfielder Cam Emmons led the Bobcats’ defensively and helped them control the tempo.
“The defense was really solid in the back,” Gardner said. “Emmons tends to move the ball from side to side, which is necessary, and he played well defensively.”
