NORRIDGEWOCK — A passenger in a car that crashed late Saturday on Walker Road was seriously injured and later underwent surgery at a Portland hospital, police said.
Jeremy Maynard, 33, of Norridgewock was riding in a 2004 Toyota Celica at about 11:45 p.m. when the driver, William Allen, 46, also of Norridgewock, reportedly lost control of the car on a corner, Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in an email.
Mitchell said the car veered off the right side of the road, coming to stop against trees.
Maynard was trapped inside the Celica and extricated by rescue workers from the Norridgewock Fire Department, according to Mitchell.
Maynard was taken by emergency workers to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan for treatment of serious injuries. He was then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he underwent surgery, Mitchell said.
Allen was wearing a seat belt and not injured in the crash, according to Mitchell, who said Maynard was not wearing a seat belt.
Mitchell said Monday the crash remained under investigation.
“Investigation thus far revealed that excessive speed was a factor in this crash,” he said.
Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy Stacey Slate responded to the wreck and was assisted by Sgt. Ritchie Putman.
