READFIELD — The second-seeded Monmouth Academy baseball team used a five-run fifth inning Thursday to defeat seventh-seeded Lisbon 6-1 in a Class C South quarterfinal at Kents Hill School.
Monmouth (16-1) struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, but Lisbon (12-6) scored in the top of the third to even the game at 1-1.
Kyle Palleschi earned the win with two shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out one batter. Starter Sam Calder gave up three hits in three innings and fanned four. Isaac Oliveira closed out the win with two more shutout innings of relief, also allowing just one hit to go along with three strikeouts.
Luke Harmon drove in two runs and scored one for the Mustangs. Matt Marquis and Oliveira also collected RBIs. Marquis scored two runs.
Levi Tibbetts pitched all six innings for the Greyhounds. He concluded his standout multisport high school career by striking out eight batters and walking two while allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Jimmy Fitzsimmons drove in Brayden Decato to score Lisbon’s lone run. Decato had a double.
Monmouth will face No. 3 Oak Hill in the C South semifinals on Saturday.
SACOPEE VALLEY 12, HALL-DALE 0: Carson Black and Grady Cummings combined on a one-hitter as the top-seeded Hawks beat the ninth-seeded Bulldogs in five innings in a Class C South quarterfinal game in Hiram.
Black struck out eight in 3 2/3 hitless innings, and Cummings allowed one hit while striking out three. Caleb Vacchiano put the 10-run rule into effect for Sacopee Valley (17-0) with a three-run homer in the fifth.
Hall-Dale concludes the season 7-11.
LAWRENCE 3, OCEANSIDE 2 (WEDNESDAY): Hunter Lee hit a walk-off single as the fourth-seeded Bulldogs came from a run down in the seventh inning to beat the No. 5 Mariners in a Class B North quarterfinal in Fairfield.
Ben Ryder pitched a complete game for Lawrence (13-4), allowing six hits. Garret Murphy had three hits for the Bulldogs.
Jason Bartlett hit a triple and a single for Oceanside (11-6).
SOFTBALL
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 10, SACOPEE VALLEY 1: Winning pitcher Brooklyn Federico’s two-run double keyed a five-run fifth inning as the top-seeded Mustangs broke a 1-1 tie in a Class C South quarterfinal win over the ninth-seeded Hawks in Monmouth.
The Mustangs (16-1) added four runs in the sixth as they advanced to face No. 4 Spruce Mountain on Saturday.
Shanna Parsons, Bella Lyons and Grace Levesque also doubled. Federico, Parsons, Rileigh Chase, Maddie Herr and June Foyt all collected two hits.
Federico allowed just two hits and held the Hawks (9-9) scoreless after the first inning.
Sacopee Valley starter Leia Dole matched Federico with just one run allowed until Monmouth’s big fifth inning. Abby Sanborn came on in relief in the sixth for the Hawks.
