We’ve lived in the Waterville area since 1967. When we arrived, downtown Waterville had stores where we could meet our everyday needs, and find something for special occasions, too. Occasionally there were special events: stage productions involving local performers as well as high-school and college students.
Eventually, the industries that supported Waterville moved away, and big-box chains dried up most of the local retail. Today, Waterville’s Main Street mostly offers places to eat and shop, plus studios and galleries.
We’re wondering whether Colby’s huge investment in downtown, including a large dorm with resident students, can sustain a genuine renewal.
