You are accosted on the street by a robber. Robber puts a gun to his head and says, “Give me your money, or I pull the trigger.”

This is like the Republican members of the House of Representatives and the debt ceiling.

Refusing to raise the debt ceiling will collapse the stock market — and thus the value of the members’ own investments.
