What do you think of the mild weather we’ve had so far this winter?
The start of the winter season in central Maine has been all about wacky weather. A solid foot of snow from a nor’easter the week before Christmas gave way to temperatures well above freezing and a rain storm that washed it all away and prompted some flooding. Temperatures immediately nose-dived and a coating of ice blanketed the region. An inch or two of snow arrived recently as temperatures dropped to more seasonable levels below the freezing mark.
But we have yet to go subzero, and another warmup to near 50 degrees with rain was slated as we approach mid-month. The forecast for the Martin Luther King Jr. week held out the chance of some snow accumulation even as temperatures were predicted to barely get below freezing.
The weather may be providing some relief when it comes to heating oil bills and woodstove usage, but winter recreation doesn’t have much to work with in the lower elevations where snowpack is skimpy to non-existent.
