A New Vineyard man and his 5-month-old son were hurt Sunday afternoon when the automobile in which they were traveling hit a utility pole and several trees in New Sharon, according to officials.
Nicholas Walker, 26, and his son were traveling in a 1999 Subaru Legacy when Walker reportedly lost control of the vehicle, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
At about 2:45 p.m., a state trooper observed the Subaru traveling at high speed and being driven aggressively, including making unsafe passes while eastbound on Route 2 in New Sharon, according to Moss.
The trooper pursued the Subaru, soon discovering the vehicle had left the road and hit the utility pole and trees, causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof.
The infant, who was in a child safety seat, was taken by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Walker was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
Moss said another driver helped administer first aid to the father and child.
Part of Route 2 was closed for two hours while troopers attended to and investigated the crash and so workers from Central Maine Power Co. could begin repairs to the damaged utility pole.
Preliminary information suggested aggressive driving, speed and road conditions contributed to the crash, according to Moss.
The Maine Warden Service, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, New Sharon Fire Department, Maine Department of Transportation and NorthStar Ambulance Service also responded to the crash.
