BASKETBALL
Chris Clemons scored 38 points with 10 three-pointers as the Maine Celtics (4-3) set franchise records for 3-pointers and assists in a 142-117 win Saturday night over the Westchester Knicks (2-5) at the Portland Expo.
Maine made 26 3-pointers to break the previous record of 24 set on March 11, 2016. Sam Hauser added six 3-pointers and finished with 26 points.
The Celtics had 41 assists, breaking previous record of 38 set on Nov. 19, 2019. Luke Kornet finished with 20 points and 10 assists, while Jaysean Paige had 18 points and eight assists.
NBA: Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso will have surgery next week to repair his broken right wrist after he was taken down by Grayson Allen during the third quarter of Friday night’s 94-90 loss at Milwaukee.
The team said Caruso will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks. It’s another tough blow for Chicago (28-16) after it announced Thursday that guard Lonzo Ball needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
HOCKEY
ECHL: Mathew Santos scored two goals and Nick Master had one as the Maine Mariners beat the visiting Orlando Solar Bears, 3-1.
Maine took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Master in the first period. Santos made it 2-0 in the second, before Orlando’s Tyler Bird scored. Santos added an insurance goal late in the third.
Jeremy Brodeur made 35 saves for Maine, while Amir Miftakhov had 34 saves for Orlando.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Manchester City’s long winning run in the Premier League ended at 12 matches with a 1-1 draw at Southampton, which took points off the leaders for the second time this season.
City needed a 65th-minute header by Aymeric Laporte to earn a point at St. Mary’s, after Southampton took the lead through Kyle Walker-Peters.
Pep Guardiola’s team had won every game in the league since a 2-0 home loss to Crystal Palace on Oct. 30.
• Ruben Neves scored a late goal to give Wolverhampton a 2-1 victory over Brentford in a game interrupted for almost 20 minutes because of a drone that hovered above the field.
Ivan Toney’s volley in the 71st minute offset João Moutinho’s goal for Wolves three minutes into the second half. Moutinho then laid a pass off to Neves, who fired a shot from just outside the box into the bottom right corner in the 78th.
• Marcus Rashford scored in the third and final minute of stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win over West Ham that lifted the team above its opponent into fourth place in the Premier League.
• Newcastle claimed just its second Premier League win of the season by beating Leeds 1-0 in a big boost to its ambitions of avoiding relegation.
GOLF
PGA: Lee Hodges and Paul Barjon took advantage of a late tee time in La Quinta, California to miss the worst of a windy day and share the third-round lead in The American Express.
Hodges, a 26-year-old former Alabama golfer, shot an 8-under 64. Barjon, the 29-year-old Frenchman who played at Texas Christian, had a 65. They were at 18-under 198. Tom Hoge was a stroke back after a 68.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Scott Jamieson stayed on course for a wire-to-wire win at the Abu Dhabi Championship by making birdie at the last hole to retain his one-stroke lead at the end of the third round in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Scottish player, ranked No. 336 and seeking his first title since 2012, shot 4-under 68 and was at 11 under overall in the first European Tour event of 2022 after breaking free of a tie for the lead with Shane Lowry and Thomas Pieters (both 67s).
LPGA: Nelly Korda is just ahead of a stacked field going into final round of the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida – the LPGA’s 2022 kickoff event. Four women who have won majors are among the top five players.
Korda, the world’s No. 1 and five-time winner in 2021 (including an Olympic gold medal), limited her mistakes in challenging, chilly conditions for a 3-under 69 with four birdies and a bogey, and is 13-under 203 overall. Korda, 23, won the 2021 Gainbridge LPGA on the same course, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.
Danielle Kang, the runner-up at this tournament a year ago, and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez, the 2020 TOC champion, each went bogey-free in matching Korda’s 69, and will begin the final round one shot back. Canada’s Brooke Henderson and Japan’s Yuka Saso matched the day’s low score of 68 and will begin Sunday two and three strokes behind Korda, respectively.
SKIING
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Dave Ryding became the first British winner in the 55-year history of the Alpine skiing World Cup, triumphing in one of the classic slaloms of the men’s circuit in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Ryding, who was sixth after the opening run, was leading the final leg when he saw the last five racers all make big mistakes and finish well behind – or not at all.
Lucas Braathen, who spectacularly won the slalom in Wengen last week coming from 29th position after the first run, finished 0.38 seconds behind in second, followed by Norwegian teammate Henrik Kristoffersen, who improved from 24th after the opening run.
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: A week after crashing at high speed in Austria, Sofia Goggia captured her fourth win in five World Cup downhills this season in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, despite a mishap-filled run in which the Italian was all over the shortened Olympia delle Tofane course.
Hit by a big gust of wind shortly into her run, Goggia was pushed way wide and had to check her skis to get back into the racing line. A bit further down, she again drifted off course and almost missed a gate. But Goggia regained her speed after each mishap and won by 0.20 seconds ahead of Ramona Siebenhofer of Austria.
Ester Ledecka, the Czech athlete who won golds in both skiing and snowboarding at the 2018 Olympics, finished third, 0.26 behind Goggia.
