Leroy Starbird, 96, of Clinton, is the most recent recipient of the town’s Boston Post Cane, signifying that he is Clinton’s eldest resident.
Longevity runs in his family. His mother, Florence Griffeth, held Burnham’s cane from 1996 to 2001, according to a news release from Coleen Bean, treasurer of the Clinton Historical Society, on behalf of the society.
Starbird was born April 21, 1925, and grew up in Burnham, but he has lived in Clinton more than half his life.
He attended Clinton High School for two years before transferring to Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield.
After school, he enlisted in the Army and served for three years.
He was employed by Ski-Land Woolen Mill in Clinton for several years before starting his own business as a house painter and general contractor.
Starbird has one daughter, Kathy Warburg, and her husband Paul.
