SIDNEY — Maine Arts Academy Student Theater Company plans to present “Requiem,” an original play that tells the story of the band members who played on the Titanic. The production will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, and at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the 11 Goldenrod Lane academy.
The play, written by MeAA sophomore Emily Carlton, recalls the events that took place in the hours before the ship’s sinking.
“You’re going on a journey” in the play, reflects playwright Carlton, according to a news release from the academy. “These people are seeing their whole lives descend into chaos, yet they keep returning to doing what they love until the very end.”
A talk back with the cast and crew will follow the performances. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, performers and audience members will be masked during the performances.
The Student Theater Company at MeAA focuses on collaboration between student actors, directors, playwrights and technical team to achieve a common goal.
“You dive into all of these different aspects of your craft, and it’s so rewarding to be able to take these classes at a school level,” said student director Amara Aiken, a senior. “I’ve learned the language of the actors, the director, and the playwright. Being able to communicate with professionals and understanding these aspects of theater is an experience that I could only get here at MeAA.”
“Requiem” features original music by MeAA’s Electronic Music Ensemble, which will be performed live during the performances.
The Maine Arts Academy Theater Program is run under the direction of Jeri Pitcher and focuses on the creation of original theater through a collaborative workshopping process. All proceeds from performances will benefit the MeAA Student Theater Company and future productions.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. The story of the Titanic involves mature themes, and is recommended for ages 10 and older.
