My grandson and I were involved in an auto accident on Oct. 6 which left us in the ditch with an undriveable car, but luckily with no injuries. The stop sign at the junction of routes 135 and 17 in Readfield was not so lucky. As we sat there, waiting for the deputy to arrive, there were in excess of two dozen people driving past who stopped, inquired anxiously after our well-being, and offered assistance. They also offered words of sympathy to my grandson, a novice driver, which he greatly appreciated. It had been a bad week for both of us. Having so many people reach out with sincere concern left us both feeling that there is no place on earth that we would rather live. If you are one of those people, you have our undying gratitude.
The next person who showed up, unbidden but ready to help, was Al Parks, who has his own towing company in Winthrop, and was passing by on his way home. Again, he was able to be of practical and morale-building assistance. When Deputy Gould arrived, my grandson feared the worst, but he was extraordinarily kind and understanding. As a result. my grandson has a much better opinion of law enforcement. Bless you, Deputy Gould! You are a credit to Kennebec County!
During this time, Al had called his wife, who agreed to drive us home to Belgrade. Bunny, you are a treasure for taking time out of your busy day to help strangers, and to do so with great good humor.
You are all remembered in my prayers, most sincerely, though I do not know all of you by name. You are the reason why Maine has always been, and will always be, my home.
