FARMINGTON — The Maine College Access Challenge Grant from the Finance Authority of Maine was awarded to Franklin County Adult Education.

The grant happened in collaboration with Regional School Unit 9, Farmington; Regional School Unit 5, Kingfield; Regional School Unit 73, Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls; and School Administrative District 52, Turner, Greene and Leeds. The collaborative effort of the programs is to form a college access network.

Organizers were rewarded with the federal program grant designed to increase the number of Maine students who are interested in going to college.

The adult education programs provide college transitions courses and college academic preparatory courses with the college ready program. The grant will allow local adult education programs to provide more inclusive services that unite the two and deliver services designed to support students who are looking toward beginning a college career.

Activities to promote college access and completion will include:

* Course work in English and math designed to support students to achieve success in the college entrance exams.

* Technology skills enhancement.

* Provide financial education to Maine students and families.

* Participate in financial aid information sessions and workshops.

* Provide debt management information to college students, with a focus on at-risk students.

Eligibility for the program includes a high school diploma or GED, as well as a desire to be a successful college- bound student.

The program is offered at no cost to the student.
