BASEBALL

The Portland Sea Dogs are changing their name – for one game, anyway. The Sea Dogs will become the Maine Whoopie Pies when they play Reading at Hadlock Field on June 21.

The promotion is being held in conjunction with the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, which will be held the next day in Dover-Foxcroft.

The team will wear special hats and jerseys, featuring a logo with a fierce Whoopie Pie character at-bat. The logo will be on the front of the caps and the left sleeves of the jerseys. The alternate logo depicts a whoopie pie in the shape of the state of Maine and will appear on the side of the caps and the right sleeves of the jerseys.

HOCKEY

ECHL: Maine Mariners goaltender Brandon Halverson was recalled to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. Halverson is 15-13-0-1 with a 2.67 GAA and a .924 save percentage.

Connor LaCouvee replaces Halverson on the roster, agreeing to a one-year two-way AHL contract with the Laval Rocket. It will be LaCouvee’s third stint with the Mariners this season.

BASKETBALL

G LEAGUE: Justin Bibbs scored 12 points during the first quarter as the Maine Red Claws (12-21) opened a 10-point lead during a 121-98 win against the Greensboro Swarm (17-17) at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Maine closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run for a 37-27 lead en route to a 69-53 halftime margin. The Red Claws maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Bibbs scored 22 for Maine, P.J. Dozier 19 and Archie Goodwin 13.

SOCCER

BODY FOUND: Police confirmed that the body recovered from a plane in the English Channel was that of Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala.

Sala, who had just signed with Premier League club Cardiff, and pilot David Ibbotson were the only people onboard the small aircraft that disappeared over the English Channel last month.

GOLF

LPGA: Felicity Johnson made a late move up the leaderboard at the Vic Open to take a two-stroke lead after the opening round at Barwon Heads, Australia.

Johnson shot an 8-under 65 on the Creek course at the 13th Beach Golf Links, where men and women played in alternate groups in the unique tournament format also sanctioned by the men’s European Tour.

Su Oh had a hole-in-one and had held the lead for most of the day with Anne-Catherine Tanguay, both at 6 under.

PGA: Phil Mickelson shot a 6-under 65, one shot behind Brian Gay and Scott Langley at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, California.

Mickelson didn’t miss a single fairway. According to the PGA Tour, Mickelson has done it seven times, most recently 21 years ago at Torrey Pines.
