SNAPSHOT: Tucked-in turtle

An eastern painted turtle retreats into its shell Monday while crossing a gravel bar in Augusta. Aside from warming in the sun, female turtles emerge on dry land in the late spring to lay eggs. Motorists should also be on the lookout for baby turtles, which also cross roads and parking lots to reach water.
