The extreme vitriol aimed at Rep. Jared Golden was surprising and an all-too-sad reminder of how soft we have become as a society (“Jared Golden criticized for vehemence of his opposition to student debt relief,” Aug. 18). His disapproval of handout bailouts of college debt for people who have acquired loan debt to attend college is on point. Why should a student who chose to attend an upscale college and thereby run up a higher debt be bailed out over the student who chose the affordable community college route and demonstrate the responsible route to gaining an education and moving forward into adulthood? Where is the lesson that our choices have consequences to be borne by only us? What about the many millions who have struggled over the years to clear their college debt and whose lives are testament to that sacrifice?

Golden is merely asking that we pull up our own bootstraps and gain strength by so doing!
